If you've been following me for awhile you know that there was a time that I would watermark my photos either on Facebook or my website. The truth is I really dislike watermarks and thought I needed to do it to my photos for protection and to look more "professional". In my opinion watermarks suck! They take away from the photo and offer no real protection from theft. If I spend time and energy editing a photo to look the way I think it should look and then paste a watermark on it am I doing the photo justice? Nobody comes to my website to see my awesome logo and I don't want future clients to think that when they get a photo from me that I'm going to plaster my name all over the photographs I created for them.
Watermarks can be a touchy subject for photographers and there are typically 2 camps, the ones that are strongly for watermarks and those who are strongly against them. I kind of fall in the middle I don't like them for myself but i'm not going to criticize others who do it.
I've seen some great photos that other photographers put out there and they will be these great photos but then they put there watermark right in the middle of the photo. In my opinion that takes away from the photo and becomes less eye catching because the first thing your eye goes to is the watermark and not the image.
The photo above looks horrible with the watermark plastered in the middle. Yes it would be harder for somebody to steal the image but do I want to vandalize my creation just for the sake of a little security or advertisement....no.
Will I ever put a watermark on one of my images? Mmmmm maybe. The one area where I would consider doing it again would be if I was doing an event like a sporting event and I wanted to make sure that the participants who were photographed knew where they could get a copy of their photo. Also I'm known to change my mind and I won't say that I will never do something.
Have a great day
